Is ethnicity determined by mother or father? ›

Beginning in 1989, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) changed their standards for determining a child's race. Since that time, a child's race has been determined by the race of the mother as reported on the birth certificate.

Fathers, like mothers, are pillars in the development of a child's emotional well-being. Children look to their fathers to lay down the rules and enforce them. They also look to their fathers to provide a feeling of security, both physical and emotional.

Neither parent is more important, and both are vital. What matters most is that both parents show up and stay involved. Both parents are indispensable and hugely important to kids through all stages of life. The true extent depends a great deal on the relationships and the people involved.

Moms and Dads are Equally Important

Mothers and fathers have parenting roles that equally impact the healthy growth of their children. Sometimes, moms and dads fulfill similar parenting roles differently. Kids need time to play with their parents, for example. Both moms and dads can do that, but they do it differently.

The DNA you inherit is random. One or both parents may have ethnicities that they didn't end up passing down to you–or they may have passed down only a small portion of a region they have.

Each parent passed down half of their DNA to you. This means that there's half of their DNA that you didn't inherit. Your ethnicity inheritance only shows the parts of their DNA that you inherited. This means you're seeing only half of each parent's estimated ethnicity.

Genetically, you actually carry more of your mother's genes than your father's. That's because of little organelles that live within your cells, the mitochondria, which you only receive from your mother.

Father is generally considered as the head of the family. He has to take care of the basic needs of the household. Mother on the other hand takes care of the in-house functions of the home. Father takes care of the members of the family by earning income through a job.

Mothers do more managing and organizing

Both of these roles are important for the child. Mom is protecting the child and dad is preparing the child. Another role of the protector that fathers play is by observing the social environment and knowing the peers and friends of their children.

Mothers mainly focus on providing emotional support and nurturing, while fathers mostly provide guidance to their children about future behaviors (Jeynes, 2016).

Balance is key.

Each approach is essential for a child's healthy development. When either parenting style is extreme it can have an unhealthy effect on children, but together the different approaches of a mother and father are balanced to nurture the child, expand his experiences and give him confidence.
