It's hard to blame them for thinking about it. CorrespondentNEIGHBOUR, which has become a daunting task, recreating the imaginative world of Whoville from the original books could have been much easier if the practical effects had been removed. Fortunately, they've kept a mix of the practical and the digital, resulting in a true Whoville.
The Grinch's yellow eyes were practical and digital.
While the Jim Carrey Grinch makeup team did an excellent job of camouflaging Jim Carrey behind the prosthetics and makeup, it's the yellow contacts that really solidify the whole package. This blurs him out and allows the viewer to enjoy his performance and not be distracted by the "Jim Carrey" alarm going off in his head. The price of this efficiency, according to Carrey, was a great concernThe Washington Times, being the eyes the main point of pain.
Carrey reached a breaking point multiple times, requiring the effects team to digitally insert her into certain shots. This means that the Grinch's distinctive yellow eyes required a combination of manual and digital effects for the film to work.
Bringing the Grinch suit to life would be a difficult prospect. Neither the original book nor the cartoon gave the wardrobe department much work. They knew it had to be green and have yellow eyes. CorrespondentGX104In the end, they decided that the only way the live-action Grinch could come to life was with yak hair, a spandex suit underneath, and some creepy yellow contact lenses.
The yak hair was dyed green and individually woven into the spandex suit. If that doesn't sound too uncomfortable, the yellow contacts proved just as effective for Carrey's sensitive eyes. Incredibly, they were even able to take a character as cartoonish as the Grinch and bring it to live action.

This is just another (and not the last) example of how hard the film's effects team worked. Jim Carrey wore the Grinch costume for 92 days
While the task of donning the costume and dealing with his extreme ailments is worth discussing on its own, the number of times Carrey has had to don the full Grinch suit is staggering. Since there were no scenes with Carrey without makeup, every scene she filmed had to be edited in green. This meant that the actor had to wear the costume for a total of 92 days over the course of a year of filming.
Given his comments about how uncomfortable he felt in the process, it's easy to see why it was such an exhausting process for Carrey.
The director wore the Grinch costume on a day of filming
It's doubtful that Carrey's displeasure at donning the Grinch costume so many times would go unnoticed by anyone on the production, let alone director Ron Howard. Realizing the difficult nature of the process, he decided that Carrey should know of his thanks. On a day of production, Howard arrived at work at 3:30 am, ready to compose himself for the Grinch.
While anxiously awaiting Carrey's response, he actually had an angry reaction when Carrey thought Howard was a stunt double who "didn't look like him". After receiving the full explanation, Carrey confirmed his appreciation for Howard's sentiment. Of course, Carrey and Howard weren't the only ones wearing Jim Carrey's iconic Grinch outfits, as actor Josh Ryan Evans played the 8-year-old Grinch in a few scenes.
More than 152,000 pounds of marble was crushed to make snow
There's a lot more to creating the Whoville set than building some fake houses and planting some trees. You have to set the scene, infuse the city with a sense of authenticity, and then cover everything with a mountain of snow. Since real snow couldn't be used (as it would melt), the production team had to find a way to make it snow. The solution? Crushed marble.
How much? More than 75 tons of it. It's doubtful anyone wants to know how long it took to get that much "snow", but at least it looked good!
More than 250 hand-woven garments were made for the film.
While each Who in Whoville has very similar appearances and facial designs, their individual outfits differ markedly (but not too different) from one another. This was accomplished by Los Angeles-based sweater designer Suss Cousins, who, along with two other knitters, created 250 original garments.

Sir Anthony Hopkins, a true professional, was the perfect choice as the narrator. His soft voice provides a smooth acting medium throughout the film. That careful balance combined with a significant number of lines can make him seem like he took a while to write it. In fact, it was done in one day.
To show that he can do that "acting" thing in his sleep, Hopkins' time withKilljoyit was incredibly short. Compared to his fellow actors on screen, his film experience seems almost entirely zen. I wish all acting jobs were this efficient.
In total, more than 1000 hours were invested in make-up
While the effects team received rave reviews, now is the time to give the makeup team some love. In total, over 1,000 hours were spent applying makeup and prosthetics to all of the Whos in Whoville and the Grinch. Cited as the film with the most makeup used overall (other than the titleThe Wizard of Oz),Killjoywould have completely failed without this dedicated teamwho incredibly created the christmas spoiler.
They didn't just get a pat on the back for their efforts. The film's only Oscar was for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and it serves as a lasting reminder of her hard work.
Jim Carrey's struggles on set
Spending several hours a day putting on costumes, makeup, and prosthetics can put anyone in a bad mood. However, once the team forces someone to do this all the time and puts them in a position they're not ready for, they can start attacking. According to an interview withIndieWireWith lead makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji, Carrey seemed unprepared for the intensity of the Grinch's outfit.
This, along with other personal struggles, resulted in some outbursts from Carrey that led to Tsuji temporarily leaving. He then returned after being asked by Ron Howard, and Carrey also promised to be more sensible so his acting could take over.when he created some of the best Grinch quotes.
Production was halted periodically due to Carrey's accidental disappearance.
To add to production struggles, Carrey had a nasty tendency to disappear for days at a time. These were completely random and never really explained, as Carrey would be back and the business would continue as planned.
As will be discussed in the next point, it appears that Carrey has had some issues and this disappearance, while still unexplained, was a direct side effect of those fights. Fortunately, he seems to have accepted these problems and managed to solve them.

As it turns out, working on this movie wasn't the healthiest experience for everyone. While Carrey clearly had his own problems, it was makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji who took the hardest hit.
